Double world champion Luis Alberto Hernando will participate in Transvulcania

Double trail world champion Luis Alberto Hernando has confirmed his participation in the Marathon and the Vertical Kilometer of Transvulcania Naviera Armas 2017. The Burgos sportsman will try to add two new victories to his track record in the La Palma competition, where he has obtained three triumphs in the Ultra Marathon.

The Sports Counsellor of the La Palma Island Council, Ascensión Rodríguez, celebrated this news and pointed out that Hernando “has been one of the runners that has contributed most to place Transvulcania among the best races of the planet.” “His story and personal evolution will always be linked to this island and this event, and it has been a privilege to see him reaching the top,” she added.

Luis Alberto, for his part, explained that the initial goal was to run his fifth consecutive Transvulcania Ultra Marathon, “but there was some calendar problems due to the proximity of the Trail World Championship.” However, he remarked that his objective was always to return to La Palma “at all costs.”

“I owe too much to this race, its organizers and, especially, to all the La Palma people, who has always showed me their support in each edition in which I have took part,” affirmed Hernando.

The long and successful career of Luis Alberto have turned him into one of the best world athletes in this discipline. His list of triumphs contain important victories like the world championships of ISF Ultra Skyrunning and IAU in the Trans Peneda Gerês, both in 2016, as well as the Speedgoat 50k 2016, the International Skyrunning Federation World Series (to which Transvulcania is part of), the Ultra Pirineu 2014 and the La Marathon Du Mont Blanc 2014.

In the same way, he accumulates other remarkable performances such as his second place in the 2015 Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB), in which he was only beaten by French Xavier Thévenard.

His personal idyll with Transvulcania started in 2013 with a praiseworthy second position in the Ultra Marathon just behind Kilian Jornet, the current trail world champion. Only one year later, he took revenge in another historic battle with Jornet. He also won in 2015 and 2016, crushing the race record with a time of 6 hours, 52 minutes and 39 seconds.

It is important to remember that Transvulcania Naviera Armas 2017, which will take place in less than one month, is repeating as official race of the Migu Run Skyrunner® World Series 2017.
