The event achieves one of its most desired goals, which is being internationally recognised as a sustainable event through the international certification UNE:ISO 20121:2013
The event also obtains the certification of the World Biosphere Reserve of La Palma called ‘La Palma Tourism’
The Transvulcania Naviera Armas has reached the finish line. The Canarian event, who has just celebrated the eleventh edition of the race, has achieved one of its most important goals ever.
The event will be one of the few events worldwide recognised with the international certification UNE:ISO 20121:2013. This puts the Transvulcania Navieras Armas on the same level as many events with an enormous international impact, such as the Olympic Games in Rio 2016, the European Football Championship in 2016, Roland Garros, the Paralympic Games in London 2012, the Barcelona World Race or the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell-Trofeo Conde de Godó.
Transvulcania will be the second event in Spain with this certification, together with the race in Penyagolosa, which also has the most prestigious certification in sustainability worldwide. This achievement has been realized thanks to the help of many companies and volunteers, with special appreciation to Asteyma, a technical advisory of environmental management in La Palma, which has been vital for the Transvulcania in order to achieve this certification. Sodepal, the organizing company of the Transvulcania, received the distinction on Saturday during the award ceremony of the different modalities of the Transvulcania Naviera Armas 2019.
Furthermore, this is not the only good news received by the organization of the event, as the Transvulcania Naviera Armas has also achieved another certification. The most international and recognised event in La Palma has managed to obtain the certification ‘La Palma Tourism’, given by the World Biosphere Reserve after many years of hard work in a project directed toward an environmental, social and economic sustainability.
The event has received the formal communication of this certificate, which makes the event a referent among other races in Spain and in the world as a totally sustainable race, after having adopted some innovative efforts in order to obtain this award.
The path taken in other editions has paid off thanks to the use of biodegradable and compostable material instead of the consumption of plastic materials. The use of plastic for the classical advertising media such as tarpaulins or plastic signs has been totally removed. Instead, the organization of the event has used biodegradable material and ink, among other actions. It needs to be said that the use of public transport to assist to the Transvulcania Naviera Armas 2019 has been another great reason to achieve this certification, as there were many families and fans who took the public transport instead of using their own personal cars, which is obviously great for the environment.
“These awards are a recognition to the work we have been doing for many years, this is why it is so satisfying for the whole family of the Transvulcania, because here everyone is important and has something to contribute”, said the sports counsellor of La Palma, Ascensión Rodríguez, who thanked the “involvement of those who have made this possible”.
